About
“Came as an angel, left as an ogre.”
“Came as an angel,
left as an ogre.”
Black Schwartz makes dark, unhurried folk music — songs about
wayward souls and forgotten roads, angels and ogres, lovers and seekers;
hymns to the restless heart and the mad passenger;
tales of good hope and hard luck, strange times and slow healing.
Grounded in singer-songwriter traditions of folk and country,
the melancholy songs of Black Schwartz
summon defiance, humour, and consolation.

sets the listener on a quiet journey
born of grit, remembrance,
and a search for redemption.

Who is Black Schwartz?
Stephen Grant Schwartz is Black Schwartz, a Canadian singer-songwriter of indie-folk and alt-country. Stephen has performed as Black Schwartz for almost two decades in the two cities he calls home — Toronto, Ontario and Istanbul, Turkey.
Black Schwartz has been putting words to music since childhood, deeply influenced by his songwriting compatriots, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Stompin' Tom Connors, and Wade Hemsworth. His other major influences include the usual suspects from the world of indie-folk (Bob Dylan, John Prine, Nick Drake, Tom Waits) and country (Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, and Merle Haggard). Words and music are equal companions in this tradition.
Other guiding lights for Black Schwartz are Vashti Bunyan, Sade, Lou Reed, Roy Orbison, Mississippi John Hurt, Lightnin' Hopkins, Leadbelly, David Bowie, Lhasa de Sela, Jane Birkin, Erik Satie, J.S. Bach, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Âşık Veysel (one of the greatest of all folk poets).
His debut album, Little Meadow, was released in 2020. Black Schwartz is currently working on several projects, and he plans to release a new album in 2026/27.
